FAQ

Quick Answers

A free, independent travel guide for Koh Samui and the Gulf Islands. We cover getting here, beaches, island hopping, activities, and trip planning — all written from experience, not scraped from other sites. We partner with 12Go for ferry bookings, Viator and GetYourGuide for tours and activities, and earn a small commission when you book through our links. You pay the same price either way. Part of the IN Travel Network — 321 destination guides across Southeast Asia and beyond.
The fastest way is flying direct with Bangkok Airways (65 minutes, THB 3,500–8,000) — they own the airport so there's no competition. The smart budget route is flying to Surat Thani (AirAsia from THB 1,700) then bus + ferry (1.5 hours each). The overnight sleeper train from Bangkok is a classic option — departs 6:50pm, arrives Surat Thani 7:47am, then morning ferry to Samui by lunch. All ferries bookable through our 12Go search tool.
January to April for the best weather — dry, sunny, calm seas. December is peak season and prices spike over Christmas/New Year. Unlike the Andaman coast (Phuket, Koh Lanta), Samui's worst monsoon months are October and November — heavy rain, rough seas, and some ferry disruptions. May to September is shoulder season — occasional rain but cheaper accommodation and fewer crowds. Ang Thong Marine Park closes during the worst weather (usually Nov).
Chaweng for nightlife, restaurants, and the widest range of accommodation — it's the busiest but most convenient. Lamai for a quieter version of Chaweng with better value hotels. Bophut (Fisherman's Village) for boutique charm, Friday walking street, and a more grown-up feel. Maenam for budget stays and an authentic Thai beach experience. The south and west coasts are quieter but you'll need transport to get around.
Koh Samui is the perfect Gulf hub for island hopping. Koh Phangan is 30 minutes by ferry (Full Moon Party, yoga, beaches). Koh Tao is 2 hours by Lomprayah catamaran (world-class diving). Ang Thong Marine Park is a spectacular 42-island day trip. The classic route is Samui → Phangan → Tao over 7–10 days. All ferries bookable through 12Go above.
Budget travellers can manage THB 1,000–1,500/day (hostel dorm, street food, scooter). Mid-range is THB 2,500–4,500 (3-star hotel, mix of restaurants, some tours). Comfort is THB 5,000–10,000 (pool villa, nice dining, day trips). Samui is more expensive than mainland Thailand and most Thai islands — Bangkok Airways flights and the resort infrastructure keep prices higher than, say, Koh Lanta or Koh Phangan.
Completely. We earn a small commission when you book through our partner links (12Go, Viator, GetYourGuide, Amazon). You pay the same price as going directly to those platforms — our commission comes from the provider, not from you. No sponsored listings, no paid rankings. If we recommend something, it's because we think it's worth your time.
travel In Koh Samui is part of the IN Travel Network — 321 destination guides across Southeast Asia and beyond. We're an independent, self-funded editorial team. No tourism board sponsorship, no operator payoffs. We write the guides, our partners handle the bookings. If you run a local business on Koh Samui and want to reach our audience, there's a separate partnership page — but editorial stays independent.
