Bangkok Airways owns Koh Samui Airport — they're the only airline flying direct. Fast but expensive (THB 3,500–8,000 one-way). 20+ daily flights. Airport is tiny and charming — open-air terminals, 10 minutes to Chaweng.
The smart budget option. Fly AirAsia, Nok Air, or Thai Lion to Surat Thani (from THB 1,700), then bus + ferry to Samui. Lomprayah catamaran is the fastest ferry (THB 850). Total saves you 50–70% vs Bangkok Airways direct.
Classic backpacker route. Train #167 departs Bangkok at 6:50pm, arrives Surat Thani 7:47am. Joint bus+ferry leaves at 8am, reaching Samui by lunchtime. Second-class sleeper berth THB 500–700. Book the train early — berths sell out.
Quick hop between the two Gulf islands. Lomprayah and Seatran run multiple daily ferries. Raja Ferry car ferries also available. Arrives at either Nathon or Bangrak pier on Samui depending on operator.
The crown jewel. 42 limestone islands, the famous Emerald Lake (Thalay Nai), kayaking through sea caves, snorkelling over coral, and a hike to the viewpoint. Speedboat tours include hotel pickup, lunch, and equipment. Open Dec–Apr, best visibility Jan–Mar.
Visit the 12-metre golden Big Buddha at Wat Phra Yai, the colourful Wat Plai Laem with its Guanyin statue, and the hidden Secret Buddha Garden in the hills. Most tours include Na Muang waterfall and a coconut plantation stop.
Learn to make pad thai, green curry, tom yum, and mango sticky rice. Most classes start with a trip to a local market to source ingredients. Small group sizes, usually 8–12 people. You eat everything you cook.
Samui Elephant Sanctuary rescues retired working elephants. Walk alongside them, watch them bathe, and feed them. No riding, no chains, no shows. Book ahead — limited daily visitors to minimise stress on the animals.
The closest island hop from Samui. Full Moon Party, Thong Nai Pan beaches, yoga retreats, and Bottle Beach. Do it as a day trip or stay 2–3 nights. Multiple daily ferries from Bangrak and Nathon piers.
Thailand's dive capital. Cheapest PADI certifications in the world, Sairee Beach, Shark Island, Koh Nang Yuan viewpoint. Lomprayah catamaran is fastest (2 hrs). Worth 3–4 nights minimum if you're diving.
The classic Gulf of Thailand loop. Start on Samui for beaches and temples, ferry to Phangan for the party/yoga scene, then Koh Tao for diving. Fly out of Samui or ferry back to Surat Thani for a budget flight home. All ferries bookable on 12Go.
Stay overnight on Koh Hua Talap inside the marine park. Basic bungalows and tent rentals available. Watch sunset from the viewpoint without the day-trip crowds. Must book through the national park office — not available via tour operators.
7km Chaweng for nightlife and water sports. Lamai for a quieter vibe with great restaurants. Bophut Fisherman's Village for boutique charm. Maenam for budget stays and authentic Thai beach life. South coast for solitude.
Preserved wooden shophouses along Bophut's beachfront. Friday Walking Street is the highlight — live music, street food, handmade crafts, and a sunset backdrop. During the week, it's quiet cafes, yoga studios, and boutique shopping.
Na Muang 1 is a 5-minute walk from the car park — swim under the 18-metre cascade. Na Muang 2 is a steeper 30-minute climb through jungle but more dramatic. Wear proper shoes (not flip-flops). Best after rain, weakest March–April.
Different night market every night of the week. Lamai Sunday market for crafts and food. Maenam Thursday for a local experience. Nathon for the best prices. Chaweng Walking Street daily but more touristy. Budget THB 100–300 for a full meal.
