Which Itinerary Is Right for You?

3 Days — Best For

Short trips, weekend breaks from Bangkok, or Samui as one stop in a longer Thailand trip. Covers the essential highlights: best beach, temples, one day trip.

5 Days — Sweet Spot

Enough time to explore Samui properly plus a day trip to Ang Thong Marine Park. No rushing, good mix of beach, culture, and adventure. This is our recommended minimum.

7 Days — The Full Gulf Experience

Samui + island hopping to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. The classic Gulf Triangle. You'll see three islands, experience three completely different vibes, and have the best stories.

3-Day Highlights Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive & Beach

Morning: Arrive at Koh Samui Airport (USM) or by ferry at Nathon/Bangrak pier. Get to your hotel — if you're flying Bangkok Airways, you'll be checked in by lunchtime. We recommend basing yourself in Chaweng or Lamai for a 3-day trip (see our beaches guide for the full breakdown).

Afternoon: Beach time. Settle in, swim, get oriented. If you arrived early, walk to the north end of Chaweng for the quietest section. Apply reef-safe sunscreen generously — you'll underestimate the tropical sun on day one.

Evening: Fisherman's Village (Bophut) for dinner if it's Friday (walking street market). Otherwise, Lamai Sunday market or Chaweng's restaurant strip. Budget: THB 300–800 for dinner.

Day 2 — Temples & Culture

Morning: Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) and Wat Plai Laem — both free entry, both on the northeast corner of the island. Allow 2 hours total. Read our temple tips for dress code and etiquette. Bring a sarong for covering up.

Midday: Thai cooking class — book a half-day afternoon class through Viator. You'll learn 4–5 dishes and eat everything you cook. THB 1,200–2,500.

Evening: Night market — whichever one is running (check the schedule in our night markets section).

Day 3 — Snorkelling or Adventure

Option A — Silver Beach & Coral Cove: Scooter or taxi to Silver Beach for the best snorkelling on the island (bring your own snorkel mask). Then 5 minutes to Coral Cove for a hidden gem swim. Afternoon at Na Muang Waterfall 1 — pack water shoes and a waterproof phone case.

Option B — Ang Thong Marine Park: Full-day speedboat tour (THB 1,700–2,800). Emerald Lake, kayaking, snorkelling, beach time. This is the highlight of most people's Samui trip. Book through Viator at least 2 days ahead — popular tours sell out.

Evening: Farewell dinner on the beach. Chaweng and Lamai both have beachfront restaurants. Budget THB 500–1,500 for a proper final meal.

3-Day Budget Estimate

Budget: THB 4,000–6,000 (excluding accommodation and flights). Covers food, transport, 1 activity, and spending money.

Mid-range: THB 8,000–12,000. Covers food, 2 activities (cooking class + Ang Thong or elephant sanctuary), transport, and comfortable dining.

Comfort: THB 15,000–25,000. Covers food at nice restaurants, Ang Thong speedboat, cooking class, spa, Grab everywhere.

5-Day Explorer Itinerary

Days 1–3 follow the 3-day itinerary above, with Day 3 as Option B (Ang Thong). Then:

Day 4 — South Coast & Elephants

Morning: Ethical elephant sanctuary visit — book through GetYourGuide for pickup. Walk alongside rescued elephants, feed them, watch them bathe. THB 2,500. This is a genuine rescue operation — no riding, no chains. Read our full elephant sanctuary review.

Afternoon: Overlap Stone viewpoint for panoramic views over Lamai. Then Secret Buddha Garden if you're up for the adventure (steep 4WD track — most people book a guided tour that includes transport).

Evening: Five Islands Viewpoint at the Intercontinental for sunset cocktails (THB 400–600/drink, but the view is legendary). Then Maenam Thursday market or Fisherman's Village Friday market depending on the day.

Day 5 — Beach Day & Departure Prep

Morning: Silver Beach or Coral Cove — your final snorkelling session. Pack reef shoes and your snorkel mask for one last swim.

Afternoon: Spa treatment (Samui has excellent and affordable spas — THB 800–2,000 for a 2-hour Thai massage and body scrub). Then pack and head to the airport or pier.

Day 5: Koh Phangan

Full day exploring: Thong Nai Pan beaches (northeast coast — 45 minutes by scooter), Bottle Beach hike (bring sturdy shoes and a dry bag), or a yoga class at one of the many retreat centres. If it's Full Moon Party night — that's tonight. Otherwise, the island's quiet bars and viewpoint restaurants are the evening plan.

Day 6: Ferry to Koh Tao

Morning: Lomprayah from Thong Sala to Koh Tao (1.5 hrs, THB 450–600). Book via 12Go.

Afternoon: Check into Sairee Beach. Walk the beach road, pick a dive shop if you want to do a discovery dive or PADI course tomorrow.

Evening: Sairee Beach sunset — arguably the best sunset in the Gulf. Cheap cocktail bars line the beach. Budget THB 200–500 for drinks and street food.

Day 7: Koh Tao & Return

Morning: Koh Nang Yuan day trip — the triple-island sandbar viewpoint. Bring your own snorkel mask (THB 100 entrance fee, no plastic bottles allowed). Or: do a 2-dive fun dive package if you're certified (from THB 2,500).

Afternoon: Lomprayah catamaran back to Samui (2 hrs, THB 600–850). Arrives at Bangrak Pier. Transfer to airport for your evening flight, or stay one more night.

These are per-person estimates. Samui is more expensive than mainland Thailand — Bangkok Airways flights and the resort infrastructure keep prices higher than Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. If you're on a tight budget, consider staying in Maenam (cheapest area) and eating at night markets instead of restaurants.

Money tip: set up a Wise card before you travel — the real exchange rate saves you 3–5% on every transaction vs your bank. Withdraw larger amounts (THB 10,000–20,000) per ATM visit to minimise the THB 220 fee. Full money guide in our first-timers guide.

Planning Tips

Pre-Trip Essentials

Packing for Multi-Island Trips

If you're doing the 7-day Gulf Triangle, pack light — you're carrying your bag on and off ferries. A set of packing cubes keeps everything organised in a single backpack. Essential items: dry bag for ferry crossings, power bank for full days without charging, and reef-safe sunscreen (hard to find on smaller islands at reasonable prices).
