Which Itinerary Is Right for You?
Short trips, weekend breaks from Bangkok, or Samui as one stop in a longer Thailand trip. Covers the essential highlights: best beach, temples, one day trip.
Enough time to explore Samui properly plus a day trip to Ang Thong Marine Park. No rushing, good mix of beach, culture, and adventure. This is our recommended minimum.
Samui + island hopping to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. The classic Gulf Triangle. You'll see three islands, experience three completely different vibes, and have the best stories.
3-Day Highlights Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive & Beach
Morning: Arrive at Koh Samui Airport (USM) or by ferry at Nathon/Bangrak pier. Get to your hotel — if you're flying Bangkok Airways, you'll be checked in by lunchtime. We recommend basing yourself in Chaweng or Lamai for a 3-day trip (see our beaches guide for the full breakdown).
Afternoon: Beach time. Settle in, swim, get oriented. If you arrived early, walk to the north end of Chaweng for the quietest section. Apply reef-safe sunscreen generously — you'll underestimate the tropical sun on day one.
Evening: Fisherman's Village (Bophut) for dinner if it's Friday (walking street market). Otherwise, Lamai Sunday market or Chaweng's restaurant strip. Budget: THB 300–800 for dinner.
Day 2 — Temples & Culture
Morning: Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) and Wat Plai Laem — both free entry, both on the northeast corner of the island. Allow 2 hours total. Read our temple tips for dress code and etiquette. Bring a sarong for covering up.
Midday: Thai cooking class — book a half-day afternoon class through Viator. You'll learn 4–5 dishes and eat everything you cook. THB 1,200–2,500.
Evening: Night market — whichever one is running (check the schedule in our night markets section).
Temple Tours & Cooking Classes — Viator
Combine Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem, and a cooking class in one bookable day. Hotel pickup included, free cancellation.

Option B — Ang Thong Marine Park: Full-day speedboat tour (THB 1,700–2,800). Emerald Lake, kayaking, snorkelling, beach time. This is the highlight of most people's Samui trip. Book through Viator at least 2 days ahead — popular tours sell out.
Evening: Farewell dinner on the beach. Chaweng and Lamai both have beachfront restaurants. Budget THB 500–1,500 for a proper final meal.
Budget: THB 4,000–6,000 (excluding accommodation and flights). Covers food, transport, 1 activity, and spending money.

| Activities | THB 0–500 (free temples, beaches) | THB 500–1,500 (1 tour/activity) | THB 1,500–3,000 (premium tours) |
| Total per day | THB 1,000–2,000 | THB 3,000–6,000 | THB 7,500–17,000 |
These are per-person estimates. Samui is more expensive than mainland Thailand — Bangkok Airways flights and the resort infrastructure keep prices higher than Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. If you're on a tight budget, consider staying in Maenam (cheapest area) and eating at night markets instead of restaurants.
Money tip: set up a Wise card before you travel — the real exchange rate saves you 3–5% on every transaction vs your bank. Withdraw larger amounts (THB 10,000–20,000) per ATM visit to minimise the THB 220 fee. Full money guide in our first-timers guide.

Packing for Multi-Island Trips
If you're doing the 7-day Gulf Triangle, pack light — you're carrying your bag on and off ferries. A set of packing cubes keeps everything organised in a single backpack. Essential items: dry bag for ferry crossings, power bank for full days without charging, and reef-safe sunscreen (hard to find on smaller islands at reasonable prices).
